The Rip Current Weekly Debrief // Casual destruction and Chinese AI

Readings of the latest from The Rip Current. This week: "The AI Stock Market Crash Isn't an Emergency. Here's What Is." and "Efficiency Will Take, Not Give"

Hi! I hope you’re having a relaxing weekend. I’m in the rain at a kids’ volleyball tournament, which is secretly a really comfortable place for me. I get to be team parent, which means I constantly get to feel a sense of purpose and responsibility and the inevitable self-admiration that I get from having an Important Job. And it’s an indoor sport.

I’ve promised you an audio digest of the week’s writings for a while now, and I’m finally figuring out an efficient workflow to make one. (It’s not quite worked out, as you’ll hear from the rain and occasional train horn in the background. I recorded it in the front seat of my car after dropping my player at the door.) This is the first, and I thank you for your patience.

Here are links to the print versions:

The AI Stock Market Crash Isn't an Emergency. Here's What Is. (January 27th)

Efficiency Will Take, Not Give (January 31st)

Paid subscribers get this exclusively for a week, and then free subscribers can listen too. Does that seem fair? I hope so.

Please listen as you do the dishes, drive home, or ride the subway. And let me know if this delivers something for you! I need as much feedback as I can get, and I’m trying to figure out what more I can give you for your generous support of what I’m doing.

Thanks much,

Jake
