Software people are now in charge. But they're not trained to consider the mind-boggling destructive power of rare unforeseen events, and that's already creating big problems.
WOW! I see daily the tragic effects of an “edge case” life-shattering event playing out before me. A buddy received an injection which is commonly known to cause “temporary blindness for usually no more than 48 hours” which has drastically reduced his formerly perfect vision 2.5 years AFTER that fateful shot. Nearly blind at 53 is unforgivable!
Very nice piece. I think you highlighted the tension between the mindset of silicon valley and the mindset of a nation state government.
It seems like Doge thinks any form of bureaucracy resulting in friction in government is a negative because it reduces efficiency.
Like you mentioned in your piece having a little bit of friction is actually helpful in a government context because you allow people to be deliberate and thorough in their analysis and thinking before creating policies that affect everyone.
It seems like trying to amputate all of the friction in government bureaucracy is making these edge cases more common and more severe.
